Dear Parents,

I am Karen Griffith, a [removed].  I am currently teaching Java programming to a group of junior and senior students.  I am also working on a research project in conjunction with completing my Masters Degree of Educational Technology Leadership at Pepperdine University. The purpose of my letter is to ask your permission for your student to participate in a project with a group of [removed] students. As part of my research I am asking my class to conduct a project based learning activity.  Project based learning entails solving a real world problem in an open ended fashion.

The project will beresearched and constructed by the students, then delivered to the end users. I have spoken with Mr. [removed] and Mrs. [removed] about partnering with your child’s class.  The fifth graders willimagine, describe and or draw a game that would help them learn and SOL skill or concept as a class or in small groups.  The Java students would then return to their classroom and create the game.  Other communications may be needed to clarify some ideas and would be handled via email through the [removed].

How and when the completed project would be presented to the class has yet to be determined.  As I mentioned earlier the problem is solved in an open ended fashion and develops as student conduct the research and interview the fifth grade students.

I would like to take some photos of the students working together to publish with my work and also need permission for that activity.  If 100% of the class agrees that it is okay for photos to be taken, I agree not to publish names of any students, individual biographical data, or unflattering images.  Otherwise I am happy to comply with your wishes and understand your decision not to allow your child to be photographed.   I am happy to answer any questions you may have or discuss this project with you before or after you give your permission to participate.  I may be reached at school at [removed]

One of the easiest ways to communicate with is email. My email address is kgriffith@sbo.hampton.k12.va.us. I am usually able to respond within 12 hours if you send a note to [removed] I have supplied two copies of this letter so that one may be retained for your information and one can be returned to me.

Sincerely,

Karen Griffith
