I have also included a summary of this interview's results or major themes at the end of this page.

1. What did you like about the online Training?

  • The online communication and participation
Is able to see everyone listed online
  • Great graphics
  • Good general understanding
  • Helpful learning how it worked
  • Better able to help mechanics in the future
  • Great Opportunity to take class
  • Online very convenient
  • Info very helpful
  • Very helpful for topics that applied
  • Great format, very informative
  • Great refresher, but learned more
  • Informative
  • Learned a lot
  • Informative
  • Learned a lot
  • Course done very well
  • Excellent Training
  • Only 1 hour
  • Enjoyed writing on Screen (went home and told wife about it)
  • Not having to move back and forth
  • Some new information
  • Sending material ahead of time
  • Great presentation
  • Very helpful for those with little autoclave experience
2. What improvements are needed?
  • Need more reminders (reading assignments etc.)
  • A consistent use of graphics (watch switching between pictures and illustrations – can be confusing, i.e. p. 62 – 66 in manual).
  • An 8am start would be better. (Mid morning can be very busy)
  • Prefers classroom, taken in one day if possible
  • Did not have enough hours to review materials, so slow review pace was okay
  • More work on P&IDs and Drawing needed for him (Inst tech perspective)
  • Reduce delay in poll and slides
  • Add more about W/O Process
  • 2 days had content about autoclaves that didn't’t apply (i.e. no jacket coolers)
  • Need to tailor more to their specific autoclaves
  • Not as good of fit as a mechanic (student was a lab tech), but still very beneficial.
  • Will recommend the training to other area leads
  • Troubleshooting Scenarios were good, but more of an explanation of why certain steps are chosen would be helpful.
  • Needed more hand-on
  • You lose hands-on when online.
  • Need to make sure people want to take class – requires discipline and a desire to attend/pay attention
  • A sheet or info on different model would help, as a reference
  • Provide answers/feedback after final assessment
  • Provide more resources, videos etc if available.
  • Group needed to be more interactive (shared responsibility between instructor and class
  • Ask for class to be more responsible, need to do reading and prepare. Make sure there is a motivation for attending.
  • Hard to get online because of busy schedule (having it at mid-day was not ideal). Prefer morning or later in the afternoon.
  • Concerned about his test results (why there wasn't’t more improvement).
  • Would have been better if we all could have been in the same class. However, understands reason – the need to have people from different sites in the same class.

3. Was the technology easy to use?

  • Yes, very easy
  • More polling would be great
  • Yes
  • Yes, liked tool
  • Yes, although had to struggle some with headset
  • Yes
  • Yes
  • Yes, very easy to use
4. How was the pace of the training?
  • Very good
  • Liked 1 hr sessions. 1 ½ hour sessions might allow a little more time to complete discussions.
  • Slow, but okay since he had little time read materials
  • Pace ok, but lagged a little at times
  • Better to have 2 hour session all in one week
  • A little slow at times
  • Very good
  • Would recommend 2 hrs classes, M, W, F format. But okay with current schedule
  • Too slow at times
  • Yes, pace was okay
  • Ok for first time
  • Should move faster next time
5. How was the difficulty of the materials?
  • Just right
  • Depends on the job roles of the trainee. For what he need from an instrument standpoint, it was too easy. However, from a mechanical understanding, it was okay.
  • Just right, easy to follow
  • Just right
  • Great Manual, will use manual as a guide in the lab
  • Materials were fine
  • Will hold on and use the materials, especially the troubleshooting techniques
  • Good

6. Where did you take the training? How was that environment?

  • Worked at desk. Worked great.
  • In a bullpen with others nearby. There were interruption and some noise.
  • Prefer to find an office or other quite place next time.
  • Hard to concentrate
  • In Lab, very convenient
  • Wireless headset would have helped (phone was on other side of room
  • At desk, little problem with distractions
  • In the Lab.
  • Over the speaker phone (phone was on opposite side of room from computer)
  • Some interruptions, but really liked the convenience.
  • In a bullpen environment with others. Used own computer but shared speakerphone. A little distracting at times.
  • Taken at desk
  • Some distractions, but was able to deal with them
  • He liked taking it at his desk (preferred over conference room because of convenience).
  • It was hard to use the phone (did not use headset).
  • Took at desk
  • Having both participants and non-participant in same room was difficult
  • Headphones would have helped, but everything was fine

7. How do you compare this type of instruction to face-to-face classroom?

  • Like online better.
  • People feel more confident speaking out
  • Enables better participation
  • Likes face-to-face
  • Prefer Online
  • Liked this type of instruction very much
  • Would choose online over classroom
  • Prefer Online to F2F. Very convenient
  • Prefer classroom when more hands-on. The online experience is still so new, difficult to tell much about it.
  • Preferred the online. He found it convenient and really liked the 1-hour classes. He said 2-hour classes would probably be okay also. He said it is hard for him to sit through long classes.

8. How was the interaction? Did you learn anything from the other sites?

  • Just fine.
  • Bob (SME) was great as a back-up
  • Enjoyed learning about differences among sites (diff equip etc.)
  • Ok, though interaction of calling on people for the scenarios worked very well
  • Interaction was okay. Since many were new to the content, they may naturally be reluctant to ask questions and participate.
  • Great interaction
  • Didn't’t respond some times because away from phone. Liked the option of responding via chat
  • Washers – even more alarms then autoclaves
  • Could have been better.
  • Very good.
  • Found learning about how different sites conduct work interesting. For example, how the instrumentation techs do some maintenance work at certain sites.
  • Participation should have been great, especially for polls (no risk for students)
  • Only those who want to attend should attend
9. How did the instructor do?
  • Good Job
  • Great Questions
  • Liked how Bob was available to support instructor
  • Okay, but better to clearly define the roles and backgrounds of the students. Might be helpful to make more site specific and tailored to a job family.
  • Did a Very good job – no suggestions.
  • Great. Good job answering questions.
  • Great job, very entertaining
  • Like having Bob (SME) available.
  • Excellent Job.
  • Pace could have been faster, but part of that responsibility falls on the class
  • Awesome
  • Great job, especially for 1 st time
  • Having Bob (SME was great)
  • Suggest having Bob and Scott in same room working together (reduce lag time)

Major Themes of Interview

Positive Feedback:

  • Most students saw the online delivery as a positive experience.
  • They felt the content provided, including the participant materials as useful. Overall the content provided was neither too difficult or too easy.
  • The instructor did a very good job and having the SME present was beneficial.
  • The WebEx tool worked very well and was liked by all respondents.
  • A majority of respondents prefer online instruction to classroom, primarily for the convenience

Negative feedback or areas of concern:

  • The pace of the instruction was too slow at times, at least for some of the participants.
  • There were some students who had an environment that was too noisy or had too many interruptions. More needs to be done to assist students in securing a area free of interruptions.
  • Several respondents requested more hands-on activity. Since the purpose of this class is to prepare students for future hands-on practice and training, it may help to better define the scope to perspective students upfront, before the class begins.
  • Although feedback on interaction was mixed, it seems to be an area to improve, especially for the less experienced attendees.
