Action Research: Cycle 3

Vern was my instructor for my cycle 3 synchronous course.

His current position is a Training Specialist II. With a background in BioTech utilities, he specializes in training for engineering and safety areas.

Despite having an extensive background in training, Vern had also instructored two sessions of our face-to-face version of our chosen course.

Bob served as our full-time subject matter expert. Bob's role was to answer any technical questions or clarify any topics as a back-up to Vern.

With over 20 years of experience with the topic, Bob was an invaluable participant in the course.

Having experts available is a major advantage to online distance learning. Several of the sites who participated do not have Bob's level of expertise at their location. This provided them access to one of Amgen's experts.

In the previous online class (cycle 2), our instructor was located in Rhode Island. Since Bob and I were in California, we were unable be in the same room as the instructor.

For this class, Vern, Bob and myself (not pictured), were all located in the same room. This proved to be far more efficient and enabld Bob and I to support Vern with little delay in communication.

Our "control" center was located at our facility in Thousand Oaks, California. We were able to book this training room for all 5 sessions.

We utilized the room's multiple network connections and conference phone to administer the session. Vern and I used our laptops and we provided a loaner laptop for Bob.

We delivered the course to students in California, Colorado, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island and Washington.

This is a picture of the WebEx window with PowerPoint and Polling features being utilized.

The polling feature allowed everyone to participate without any embarrassment for wrong answers.

Polling also helped the instructor evaluate if concepts were being understood.

Our topic was highly technical and geared toward experience mechanics and engineers.

We focused on making the course as personal and interactive as possible. Occationally we used the video function to help our intructor seem more personal. It also gave everyone a great laugh seeing Vern.

Here we are showing a knowledge check (quiz) that the students had completed on their own. In class we reviewed the answers and discussed concepts..

We also allowed the students to circle the answers on the screen. This proved to be a great way to encourage participation.
