Action Research: Cycle 3
Interview Data

After the online course was completed for cycle 3, I scheduled interviews each of the astudents. I used the same questions and approach for this interview as I did for the cycle 2 course (see cycle 2 data to compare results) Ten interviews (10 of 12 students) were completed with the questions and answers listed below.

Interview Questions (click on question to see results):
1. What did you like about the online training?
2. What improvements are needed?
3. Was the technology easy to use?
4. How was the pace of the training?
5. How was the difficulty of the materials?
6. Where did you take the training? How was that environment?

  • Had issue with schedule – being called away from training (no suggestions here)
  • More situations/scenarios of things that have happened at different sites (add these to manual)
  • More digital pictures
  • More tech info on valves
  • Suggest removing polling questions about sites etc. and focus on testing for knowledge
  • Nothing really
  • Have students get away and meet in a lab setting – reduce number of interruptions

Major Themes of Interview

Positive Feedback:

  • As with the last class, students enjoyed the live online instruction.
  • Students enjoyed working through and presenting troubleshooting scenarios. Even those who had less experience seemed to enjoy the challenge and the non-threatening approach.
  • We had a few technical issues, but for the most part the WebEx technology worked very well. There were no students who disliked the using the technology.
  • The 1.5 hour daily class schedule was well received by everyone.
  • Several students noted they felt more comfortable, non-threatened, and willing to participate with the online instruction.
  • Most students preferred online instruction over classroom, but saw advantages to face-to-face class as well.
  • All those interviewed felt the instructor did well. They also noted how the instructor made them feel both comfortable and relaxed.

Negative feedback or areas of concern:

  • The environment for learning is still an issue for some. Especially for those working in open or crowded areas, there seemed to be too much noise and distractions.
  • The topic was too technical for some. The audience for this course needs to limited to experienced mechanics or engineers. At a minimum, less experienced staff need to be better informed of the subject matter prior to enrolling.
  • Students need more self-study time before attending online sessions. Supervisors and students should be asked upfront to allow for sufficient time.
  • There were some mistakes in the manuals and knowledge checks that need to be corrected.
