Action Research Plan
November 2004 Draft (r1)

Purpose: The purpose of my Action Research is improve global learning by introducing synchronous and asynchronous web-based learning into my organization.

Problem: The problem I want to solve is the lack of adaquate technical knowledge among Amgen locations. Currently subject matter experts and experienced instructors are limited to certain sites and areas. This results in an unequally distribution of technical knowledge across all of Amgen. When training is needed, especially on advanced concepts, qualified instructors are often unavailable to provide classes. In the past, having instructors travel has been a viable option. However, cost reductions and the demand for just-in-time training require a new solution.

Research Question: If I use asynchronous and synchronous web-based learning to deliver my department's course materials to students at multiple sites, will it improve the distribution of knowledge compared to traditional site-based classroom instruction?

What I have learned most from these resources is that most of the research indicates that online learning is just as effective as traditional classroom instruction. A key to ensuring effectiveness of online courses is to provide a blend of instructional methods including both asynchronous and synchronous delivery. Interaction should also be a major component of web-based instruction. Finally, it is important to have qualified instructors who are prepared for the unique challenges of online instruction. The instructors must be comfortable with the technology and understand the unique needs of the distance learner.

Community of Practice:

I am part of a organization that designs instructional materials and curricula for manufacturing sites throughout our company. Our materials support training for all types of jobs including engineering, manufacturing, quality assurance, maintenance, and logistics. My title is a curriculum designer, but my current responsibility is more of a project manager who oversees development.

For my initial ARP cycle, I will be working with a smaller team in implementing a new prototype troubleshooting course. I recently worked with this team to design the original instructional materials and to implement the initial classroom training. We are now working to pilot a web-based version.

My Actions (Cycle 1):

My research question: If instructors and subject matter experts learn the methods and strategies for online synchronous learning, will they feel both prepared and motivated to instruct a online synchronous class.

For my first action I will facilitate an online instructor preparation session for December 2004. This will include teaching both instructors and supporting subject matter experts on how to effectively deliver online synchronous training. It will allow participants to explore this learning strategy and to practice online instructional techniques.

- Copies of Whiteboards
- Picture and Bios of all students

Evaluation:

- Feedback surveys from students, Instructors and Subject Matter Experts
- Pretest & posttest results

Plan (Cycle 2): For my second cycle I will organize an online pilot for January. This will include modifying the current classroom version and adapting for synchronous delivery.
