UPDATED - 1/13/04

The Embassy Suites is completely full on Jan. 20 and Jan. 21.  If you are arriving on Jan. 21 and have not yet made reservations, you'll need to arrange to stay in a suite with another student, or check with another hotel in the immediate area for just that night. The hotel does have availability for Jan. 22 - Jan. 26; however, the rooms in the Pepperdine block are all reserved.

CONFERENCE REGISTRATION - Updated 1/13/04

Please plan to attend the conference from the opening on Thursday afternoon until Friday evening. If you want to attend a workshop, it is your responsibility to register for those workshops separately. Your conference registration will allow you into any general session, concurrent sessions, the exhibition hall, and some special events such as the dance at the House of Blues. The workshops require special registration, however.

We have made arrangements with the conference organizers to register all of you as a group. As a result, the conference registration fee has been reduced from the normal $150 to $100 per person. You have already paid this amount as part of the fees you paid to Pepperdine University (the $350).  We will pay the conference directly and will have the badges for you when you arrive.  The conference organizers have requested that in addition to your names, we must submit certain demographic information about you.  We are finding out from the conference organizers what this information is.  Most likely you will be notified of a web site you will go to where you will complete a survey that will capture this information and will automatically generate a report for us to send to the conference organizers.

Your conference registration confirmation has been received and we should receive your badges soon. Plan to pick up your conference registration material at the Embassy Suites. The materials will either be given to you at check-in or someone from Pepperdine will be in the lobby area to give you the materials.

The FETC Conference will be held this year at a new branch of the Orange County Convention Center.  For more information about the conference, please refer to the conference web site:

http://www.FETC.org

Conference attendance should help you personally, your cadre group, and those you work with. For this reason, we strongly urge your cadre group to think of some strategies for maximizing attendance at conference sessions and innovative ways to share the information about those sessions with your peers in the cadre group as well as others. Prizes will be awarded at Exhibitions to the cadre group that demonstrates an innovative way of sharing information about conference sessions with their peers in the cadre group, with other cadre groups, as well as with others not able to attend the conference who might be interested in the sessions.

GUEST SPEAKER - Updated 1/13/04

All students should meet in Room 320e in the Convention Center at 5:30PM (right after the final session) on Friday, Jan. 23. Both Cheryl Lemke and Ted Hasselbring have agreed to speak to all of us. Cheryl and Ted are both speaking at the conference and have agreed to take the time to speak to us. We have this room until 7PM .

These will be very informal presentations. Come prepared to ask some good questions. A quick Google search will tell you a lot about their unique contributions to the field of educational technology.

OPENING MEETING

All cadre group members should plan to meet in the Embassy Suites lobby at 6PM on Thursday, Jan. 22. The manager's reception should still be going on at that point. Please plan to meet with members of the other cadres to share information about your Action Research Projects. This is a great opportunity to find out what others are doing with their projects. (We know you will want to see your own cadre group members but you don't have a lot of chances to share information with the members of the other groups so please take advantage of this time.)

PEPPERDINE BADGES - Updated 1/13/04

Please wear your FETC badge in your Pepperdine Badgeholder. This will let others attending the conference know what University you are from! Each of you will also have your own Cadre Badge. Thanks to all of you for sending in the cadre group logos. These name badges will make it easier for you to be identified by other cadre group members and by new instructors who haven't met you yet.

DRESS

Dress throughout this meeting will be casual.  Weather at this time of year in Florida can range from a high of 30 degrees to a high of 80 degress so come prepared!

FRIDAY EVENING FOOLINGS AROUND - Updated 1/13/04

For folks who want to experience Downtown Disney, the conference is sponsoring an event on Friday evening at the House of Blues.  Because all students and faculty are registered at the conference (faculty are registered as exhibitors) everyone would be eligible to attend this function.  Just a thought for you cadre madres/ padre and cadre reps to tuck away and think about when planning for your groups. The Dance starts at 8:30PM and goes to 11:30PM Shutttles will run from conference hotels (near our hotel) and the House of Blues. You must have your conference badge with you to get in.

ALL CADRE DINNER - Updated 12/21/03

We will have an all cadre dinner on Sunday evening after classes are over.  Dawn Howard is in the final contract negotiation stages with Bertramo's restaurant.  This is an Italian restaurant with singing waiters in the Convention Center area. We will have a semi-private room.  Students wishing to have alcoholic beverages can go to the bar. We will have a fixed menu with several entrees to choose from. So the all-cadre dinner will be at 7PM on Sunday, January 25 at Bertramo's.  Bertramo's is within walking distance of the hotel so unless the weather is bad this will take care of the transportation issues we have had in the past.

The cost for this dinner (exclusive of any alcoholic beverages) was also covered in the fee you paid to Pepperdine University.

TRANSPORTATION

Some of your instructors will have cars or vans to help with transportation from the airport to the hotel and to various dinners.  The Convention Center is only a half mile from the hotel so in good weather you can walk to the conference.  You will probably need to rent additional cars in your cadre groups to cover transportation needs.  You are urged to coordinate this transportation among members of your group so that all transportation needs are covered.  The hotel has only a limited shuttle service to the Theme Parks.

EMERGENCY CONTACTS

Given the uncertainties in today's world, we want to be able to contact all members of all cadre groups easily in case of last minute changes in our plans.  Your Cross-Cadre representatives have been asked to gather cell phone numbers, pager numbers, and IM addresses from all of you so that we can contact you should any emergencies arrive.  Sue Talley, the Program Director, will be primarily responsible for this.  Your cadre madre or padre may also be contacting you regarding arrangements for any special plans for your cadre group.

SCHEDULE

LAPTOPS

The hotel does offer wireless connectivity for a daily fee.  We do require that you bring your laptops.

DIGITAL CAMERAS

This might be a good time to use your digital cameras to capture things that happen at the meeting and to update cadre pages, as well as your own web page.

OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS

Remember… we schedule these face to face times to help you re-connect with folks you haven't seen in many months or with instructors you've never met face to face.  Take advantage of this time to have some fun with your peers and to get to know them even better.

We realize that your family members may want to come to FL to take advantage of the many attractions in the area.  Please let family members know that you will be actively engaged with your peers from Thursday, Jan. 22 until Monday, Jan. 26 at noon.

We look forward to seeing you all soon!

If you have questions, either ask your Cross Cadre rep or email Sue Talley (stalley@pepperdine.edu)
