Assignments:
1. Reflecting on individuals who have made a difference in your life will be helpful to you in preparing to mentor someone else. Your first assignment is to complete the Personal Reflection on pg. 2 in the Learn to Mentor Toolkit. Post your response to the reflection in the newsgroup. Then send an email / e-card or a note to one of your mentors. You can find ready-made e-cards on the Who Mentored You web site. This activity is 5% of your grade.
2. The key activity for this course is actually mentoring either an individual or a group of people. (This mentoring process may be part of your ARP; it has been for many folks in the past.) There are several components to this assignment.
? By Jan. 20 post information on your chosen mentee. This information should follow the basic format found on pg. 13 of the Learn to Mentor Toolkit but you might also choose to include other information. By this time you should also set up a blog that will allow you to enter at least one journal entry each week on the mentoring process.
? I will review your blog each week to track your progress on the mentoring process. Plan to enter something there at least once a week.
? By Feb. 17 post your current thoughts to the newsgroup about what's working and what you need help with in your mentoring relationship. Respond to these posts with your thoughts about what might help others in their mentoring relationships.
? By March 24 post a complete Relationship Checkup for both you and your mentee. The guide for this can be found on pg. 24-26 of the Learn to Mentor Toolkit.
? By April 7 post your final reflections in your blog. This last blog, especially, should reflect some deep thinking about the process of mentoring. This activity is 30% of your grade.
3. The final project will be a way for you to practice your team leadership and participation skills with your peers in this group. You have already established relationships with all of these folks; now you will create an artifact that can be used by others in the OMET program as well. Think about a resource you might create that would be helpful for Cadre 8.The key here is for the project to have meaning for your group. Wenger has identified several roles that members of a Community of Practice can play.
? Coordination
? Networking
? Facilitation
? Documentation
? Expertise
? Learning
? Inquiry
? Boundary
? Institution
As part of this final project you should work with others to serve in at least two different leadership roles during the development of the artifact. Try to take on roles perhaps that are not typical for you. Use this as an opportunity to stretch;after all you are among friends.
The subject for the final project is one of my choosing. However, in Florida, if you decide that something else is more appropriate we can certainly discuss that and determine how best to move forward. My only hope is that this artifact will be useful (and, in fact, determining its usability will be part of your team challenge.) This activity is 30% of your grade.
4. Newsgroup and TappedIn participation, as always, will be key. You must attend every TI session and post to the NG every time there is a specific requirement. As always, there will also be other discussions on the NG so you should stay tuned. Your reflections on the thoughts of others is also key and will be noted. Finally, remember that exemplary work will comment not only on the readings and your personal mentoring project but will also bring in other resources that you have found. Participation is 35% of your grade.
You know that you can email me at any time. Please let me know if anything is going on that may be affecting your performance in the OMET program.
